As a photographer I had to learn to focus on the right point so that the main thing–or what I had chosen the main thing to be–would be in focus and sharp. If I don’t do it right or fail something else is focused or the picture is blurry.

What I had the revelation about this week is the following:

The Picture

In life we have many distractions, temptations and options. It can be really hard to focus on the right thing. As I wrote in last week’s blog, we need to give our soul, body, head and spirit a rest. (The Day)

Only a day after I wrote the blog post I realized that if we set our focus on to the right point, we can better decide for what we want to use our time and capacity.

Look at the pictures above. On the right one the background is focused. Whatever is in front becomes blurry. On the left one my stone bird Carl is focused and you can recognize him. (Well, on the left one as well but not every single feather is visible.) Our eyes focused “distraction Carl” instead of the beautiful background. This is exactly how it works with temptation.

The Distraction

I want to give you an example of some distractions:

  • Thoughts; “You aren’t enough.” “They are better than you are.” “Don’t even try it.” “You are missing out on something.” “What are you doing?” “Don’t you think that’s silly?”

The Perspective

It really matters what your focus is on. And you have to refocus everyday.  Whenever I get up in the morning I have to refocus on what my main thing is. Whatever crosses my sight during this day is blurry. I might recognize it but it isn’t as important as the things my eyes see in a sharp condition. If I miss to focus my sight, distractions can get in front of what was important and take the sight. They can even make me look after it. Sometimes they are even more interesting because they move.

Did you know that when you are driving your car and focus on a tree that you eventually will hit the tree? You always drive into what you focused on. The same with walking.

The Walk

On my journey with Jesus or lets say walk I have to focus in order to walk toward him. Whatever circumstance I’m in, whatever struggle I might face, if my focus is on Jesus I can overcome them. If you don’t believe me try the following:

Lay some items on the floor. Try to walk to the end of the room with your focus on one point. You might stumble but you will reach your destination. The second time focus on each hurdle and try to reach exactly the same point at the end. It won’t work. If you don’t want a mess in your room try it while standing on one leg. First focus on one point at the end of the room and then look at something that moves.

I think you know what I want to point out here.

My prayer is that whatever you are facing now will would not be able to attract your attention and therefore lose your focus on Jesus.

The Gift

I want to add another revelation I had.

Never focus on your worry, focus on the gift God has for you. Get excited for what comes. If you don’t see a solution, get excited for the solution God has. If you don’t see a way, get excited for the way God has.

This is only possible if you believe that there is a God. A God who want what’s best for you and loves you. For me, it’s such a relief that I can believe this with all my heart. Otherwise I don’t know on what to focus on.

    Hi Luisa!

Your post reminded me a lot of Peter’s walk towards Jesus in Matthew 14. Peter was walking on water, but when he focus on the turbulence of the wind he began to sink.

Nowadays distractions are getting more and more intrusive, so focus is a necessity and a daily decision. Reading the bible on a daily basis and praying as much as we can. This may seem kind of obvious but little by little it changes us, becoming easy for us to follow God’s path and to reject any kind of distraction and temptation.

Something that i can say about “The Gift” is that many times we have good intentions, we want to fight against those things, but we fight the wrong way, we fight on our own. This counts as “focus on the problems” as well, and when we do this we fall. Insted we need to learn how to depend exclusively on God, and take everything to Him in prayer, only then we can surpass this problems. It’s really hard, but as long as we strive with Jesus we can make sure the end will be good (Rm 8:28).

I’m enjoying reading your blog, some of the your posts are actually speaking to me, to take more action. Thank you!
