The Limitation

There are friends who make you laugh, there are friends who make you move, there are friends who make you think. One of my friends from the last category inspired me for this blog post.

As we were walking around circular quay I saw a Chinese tourist with a great camera in his hands. Slightly jealous I said that I would never own such a lovely moment catcher. My friend looked at me and said: “You are limiting yourself.” “No, I am just being realistic.” The night went on and he reminded me several times that I was limiting myself. Later that night as I laid in bed, I thought about how conclusive my excuse sounded. This is what I found to be true:

A change of perspective

When I said that I was just being realistic, I said that with my narrow-minded view–i thought that i knew where my limit is. However, if I believe that God is the creator of everything, how could a camera be out of his possibilities? I looked at my situation through my eyes rather than looking at it through His eyes.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.”

The Bible, Ephesians 1:18, NIV

In greek, limitation is “peras,” this is a synonym for the end. That means that as soon as we limit ourselves we are unable to experience some of the things God has in store for us. Limitation in Greek also refers to space. I believe this is what happens when we stop ourselves–space grows between you and your calling.

When I started to focus on what God sees and what His opportunities are, I realized that it is not impossible to get this camera, for example. I believe that this is a key–a key to unopened doors. Not that God couldn’t open them, but we didn’t realize that WE have a key to these doors. This might not change your life in a second but in the long run.

(To clarify, I don’t categorize my friends it was just a good introduction for my blog post. I think it still is true that we have friends with different impact on our lives, which is good to think of.)
