When you want to become a captain of either a huge boat or an aircraft you need to know your vehicle. You have to practice and you have to listen to your instructor. As soon as you are done with your apprenticeship you are allowed to stere it on your own. You won’t be the best from the beginning. If needed, the trainer will help you or stere it for a moment. He gives you advice and helps you become better at it.
That is the revelation I recently had. God doesn’t want us to ride shotgun and just enjoy the ride. Instead, he expects us to think about the ways we take and what we’d like to explore on the road ahead. After a while He wants us to drive on our own. Then God wants to ride shotgun and enjoy the ride of our lives. Whenever I drive or go the wrong direction He is there to help me, he will never leave me nor forsake me.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
The Bible, Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV
I am convinced that God is the most patient and adventurous travel buddy. With Him by your side it is never getting boring. God wants us to become mature Christians with the ability to decide, lead and ask. He wanted us to have our own opinion on things. God loves seeing creativity, boldness and beauty. In the way I was taught earlier in my Christian life, that I have to let go of the steering wheel, these things aren’t counted as much as I think they should. God kindly takes our hand to show us where His plan can lead us but then He supports us to grow and become mature people of His. It is God’s pleasure to see how we discover the beauty he placed all over the world.
There are also times where you want to overtake or turn left and God tells you not to. There are times where other people forgot to pull the break and crash your car. There are times where you think the color of your car might not be good enough, your model is too old. There are definitely times where you have to take the exit to refill your tank. During these times remember that God is sitting next to you, ready to take over and help. God never thinks you are a loser when He has to drive again. God is proud and happy as soon as He is invited into your car.
Whether you started your first driving lesson with God or not, God is ready. Are you?
