A lifeguard guards your life. When you are in difficulties he comes to rescue you. He is there to bring you out of the water. But I’m not sure if we always need to be brought out of the water.
I had a revelation this week that Jesus also is a lifeguard but he guards me from life. So he actually isn’t a lifeguard how we know them. He brings me back into the water when I managed to get out of it.
When I was scared of the waves that swirled me and didn’t have the courage to wait for my wave. That is when Jesus as my lifeguard comes and brings me back into the water. The water of calling. The water of vision. The water of understanding. The water which is filled with gifts, surprises and another perspective. When life tries to get me out of the water, he brings me back in. Not that I couldn’t be used on the land side. But if you were meant to swim, your skills on land side won’t have the same impact as when you use them in the water. Where you were meant to be.
There is a reason why we are the called children of God. Why we are meant to go into the water. I am convinced that we could totally be in a position of resting in between huge waves. But I have realized that even if we wanted to, we don’t have enough courage or trust to do so. Sometimes we do but many times we don’t. And often times we swim back to the land side without even realizing it.
What do I mean by land side?
It’s a place where you forget what you are called for. A place where vision is past. Where gifts are “unopened.” A place where you run a race for the sole purpose of being a part of it instead of going for gold.
First you touch the sand with your tip toes without even realizing that you are getting out of the water. As soon as your feet feel solid ground you’re pretty fast.
To be out in the water brings a need with it. A need to trust God, to rely on him and swim.
Before making things to complicated with examples, let me summarize what I mean:
There is a calling for your life. A calling from God. If you know it or not. It requires your trust and courage to find it and go after it. God can give you a vision for it. In order to get there you must spend time with him – swim. On the land side where everything seems to be easier you can go into a swimming pool but it won’t be the same. Go back into the ocean and swim. Seek the Lord when you had to let go of a wave. When you are waiting for your wave. Never let go of your calling. Jesus is the savior you need – he can walk on the water, never forget this!
